LOCAL BOYS TAKE HOME THE GOLD FROM THE 3 ON 3 OPEN ICE!

Although the regular hockey season may have been over for many, on April 29, 2005, two local boys, Trevor MacDonald and Felix Lantaigne , took part in the 3 on 3 Open Ice in Sault Ste. Marie.  The boys joined the Cobalt Junior Silver Kings sponsored by Outcrop Explorations Limited of Cobalt, Ontario with other boys of the Highway 11 North corridor from Hearst Patrick Picard, from Smooth Rock Falls Connor Lamothe, from Iroquois Falls Ryan Kujawinski, Bryce Robert and Sylvain Miron, from New Liskeard Trevor MacDonald and Felix Lantaigne and from North Bay Eric Bourdon, Travis Miller (his dad Rob is from Cobalt ) and Tate Seguin.  The 3 on 3 Open Ice tournament was intended as a fun alternative to “regular season” hockey and the 3 on 3 format creates a very fast moving and physically challenging game that is also very entertaining for the spectators.  This was an excellent opportunity for our local young players to use their talents as well as their time to contribute to a very worthy cause to “help kids fight cancer”.

On Friday morning, the Cobalt Silver Kings outskated the Valley East Rebels to a 9-3 win.  In the second game, the boys swept away the Ice Angels 30-0, giving a shut out for goaltender Miron.  The Cobalt Silver Kings didn’t let up as they outplayed West Nipissing to a score of 11-3 on Saturday, followed by a victory 8-1 against the Aurora’s West side.  The local boys came out undefeated and 1st place in their division. Sunday morning, in the semi-final game against the Royalty Apparel, the Cobalt Silver Kings won this game 8-7 to bring them into the championship game.  This final game turned out to be a nail biter with a score of 3-2, entering into penalty shots, the game being tied; Kujawinski outplayed their opponents’ netminder to capture the gold!  The team would like to thank Outcrop Explorations Limited for helping them take the gold home to Silverland.
